CBM and volumetric weight calculator
Enter the size and number of packages; see the total volume and the weight a road carrier will charge for.
How it is calculated
Volume (m³) = length × width × height (cm) × quantity ÷ 1,000,000.
Light but bulky freight takes space a carrier could sell to heavier freight, so groupage counts each cubic metre as at least 333 kg: the same as dividing cm³ by 3,000.
The chargeable weight is the higher of the gross weight and the volumetric weight.
Assumptions
- Road groupage: 1 m³ = 333 kg (cm³ ÷ 3,000), common in Europe and Türkiye.
- Express parcel services use other divisors; if your carrier’s contract states one, the contract applies.
Questions
What is CBM?
A cubic metre: the space a shipment takes. 1 m³ is a box of 1 m × 1 m × 1 m.
Why am I charged for more than the gross weight?
When freight is light for its size, the carrier charges for the space it takes: if the volumetric weight is higher than the gross weight, the volumetric weight is charged.
How many cubic metres does a trailer hold?
A standard 13.6 m trailer has about 90 m³ inside (13.6 × 2.48 × 2.7 m).
